DHEA
and aging
There is mounting evidence that DHEA conservation is
associated with healthy aging. Like growth hormone
the production of DHEA declines with aging. DHEAs
home is the adrenal glands which also secrete cortisol.
While DHEA appears to protect brain function the overproduction
of cortisol associated with ongoing stress compromises
memory and impairs cognitive function.
High IGF-1 levels are connected with elevated levels
of DHEA in aging populations.
Recent research recorded by Dr Samuel Yen who hails
from the Department of Reproductive Medicine, La Jolla,
California indicates that DHEA may have a role in maintaining
lipid homeostasis which means that cholesterol levels
are regulated by this hormone.
Interleukin-6 is an inflammatory mediator which may
be associated with the decline in immune function with
aging as well as age related brain diseases. DHEA inhibits
the production of interleukin-6 suggesting its participation
in healthy brain aging.
20 minutes of transcendental meditation performed daily
increases the bodys production of DHEA.
