Whats New 2004
Treating period pain
According to American nutritional
expert Dr Melvyn Werbach as summarised in the November
2004 of the’ Townsend letter for doctors and
patients’ the following remedies can be utilised to
alleviate period pain:
- Niacin
100mg taken every 2—3 hrs during cramps. This
large dose might lead to flushing but niacinamide,
which works just as well and does not produce
flushing, might also work.
The addition of ascorbic acid 300mg and rutin
60mg daily might make this treatment more effective.
- In
one clinical trial thiamine hydrochloride 100mg
taken daily has been found to lead to significant
improvements.
- Alpha-tocopherol
50mg taken 3 times daily for 10 days premenstrually
and for the next 4 days was found to relieve
symptoms in 68% of women in the treatment group.
- If
iron deficiency is present supplementation of this
mineral can lead to resolution of period pain.
- Double-blind
studies have shown that magnesium supplementation
works. Vitamin
B6 taken together with magnesium would increase the
efficacy of this nutrient.
- A
low intake of fish oil can be managed with fish oil
supplementation, which also appears to lead to
symptom improval.
