Whats New 2004
Titbits from around the world.
- Vitamin
E supplements help prevent colds in the elderly. Nursing home residents in the USA who took 200i.u. per
day of supplemental vitamin E for a year had a 20%
reduced risk of acquiring the common cold. Vitamin E
is thought to prevent viral but not necessarily
bacterial infections as this study also demonstrated
that this regimen did not protect these nursing home
residents against pneumonias, which are commonly
caused by bacteria.
While zinc, echinacea and vitamin C are known
to reduce the duration and intensity of common cold
symptoms if commenced when the early signs of this
illness are beginning to manifest there is not a lot
of evidence that these substances are actually
preventive except perhaps for vitamin C.
- Whole-body
scans might heighten cancer risk according to a
study from Columbia University in the USA.
The radiation from a single whole-body scan
is equivalent to 100 mammograms. The radiation from
one scan is enough to produce one tumour in every
1200 people who undergo this investigation.
For those who have annual scans the risk of
developing a tumour increases to 1 in 50.
The risk for a single scan is not huge as the
statistics indicate but if you contemplate having
this procedure more often then this might not be a
wise decision as you risk increasing the likelihood
of succumbing to the type of problem that you are
trying to avoid.
