The ongoing benefits of alpha-lipoic
acid
In the anti-aging section you were alerted to the
further benefits of alpha-lipoic acid found in Neurazest. By now you will have downloaded the scientific report which
has a segment dealing with the scientifically documented
benefits of alpha-lipoic acid. In the September 2003
edition of the Life Extension journal an article, which
highlights the latest scientific research on alpha-lipoic
acid, acetyl-l-carnitine and carnosine has a number of
exciting findings to report specifically with regard to
alpha-lipoic acid (ALA). Here are some of the more significant findings:
- ALA
improves insulin sensitivity by increasing the
permeability of cell membranes to glucose in
experiments on rats.
- ALA
can limit the neuropathy or nerve damage, which is
characteristic of diabetes.
- ALA
makes the blood vessels of diabetic rats more
patent.
- 60%
of diabetes related cataracts can be prevented with
ALA.
- ALA
has the potential to prevent kidney injury due to
high blood sugar in diabetics.
- In
one study 600mg of ALA was given daily to nine
patients with Alzheimer’s disease, which resulted
in the stabilisation of mental function.
- ALA
works in tandem with vitamin E to prevent free
radical damage to brain cells in stroke victims.
- Together
with acetyl-l-carnitine ALA improves performance on
memory tasks in laboratory animals.
- ALA
works with acetyl-l-carnitine to increase vitamin C
and reduce free radical damage in aging rats.
- ALA
limits the progression of heart disease by
preventing the accumulation of those cells, which
contribute to the blockage of blood vessels.
- ALA
has the ability to prevent the elevation of blood
pressure in those rats who have high blood sugar as
well as protecting against kidney damage in the same
animals.
- In
the heart ALA has the potential to improve energy
production and reduce free radical damage.
- ALA
is toxic to leukaemia cell lines, inhibits the
proliferation of lymphocytes and increases those
immune cells, which help fight this type of cancer.
- ALA
helps with the management of chronic fatigue
syndrome by boosting energy production.
- ALA
can treat liver damage from mushroom poisoning as
well as viral hepatitis.
- ALA
and acetyl-l-carnitine can be used to treat the
muscle and nerve toxicity of reverse transcriptase
inhibitor drugs used to treat HIV-AIDS.
- ALA
and exercise combine to improve insulin action in
insulin-resistant skeletal muscles in obese rats.
