Further updates on treating enlargement of the
prostate and prostate cancer
In the December 2004 edition of the ‘Townsend letter
for Doctor’s and Patients’ American nutritional
expert Dr Melvyn Werbach sites the following remedies
for managing benign prostatic enlargement also known as
BPH:
- Combinations
of L-glutamic acid 530mg, L-alanine 200mg and
glycine 90mg taken three times daily have some
effect.
- Phytosterols
found in herbs like saw palmetto have demonstrated
some efficacy.
- Selenium
has been shown to inhibit cadmium-stimulated growth
of the prostate.
- One
trial demonstrated some benefit from zinc
supplementation although this has yet to be
confirmed by other trials.
With regard to preventing an inhibiting the progression
of prostate cancer Dr Stanley Brosman, clinical
professor from the department of urology at the
University of California, Los Angeles cites the
following factors that contribute to the promotion and
growth of prostate cancer:
- A
diet high in dietary fat and red meat
- Obesity
- An
increase in the consumption of omega-6 fatty acids
found in margarines and vegetable oils.
The following nutrients are thought to decrease the risk
of developing prostate cancer and slow the growth of
prostate cancer cells.
- Selenium
- Carotenoids
found in tomatoes and carrots.
- A
high fibre diet
- Vitamin
D from sunlight
- Vitamin E especially alpha tocopherol.
