‘Leaky gut’ and autism
‘Leaky gut’ also known as
increased intestinal permeability leads to the influx of
large molecules and peptides into the bloodstream which
is then thought to provoke the immune system and have
adverse effects on the central nervous system.
In autism these peptides might come from the
breakdown of diary products and gluten-containing foods
found in wheat, rye, oats and barley, which are
associated with the consumption of bread, cereal or
pasta. It
is these peptides that are thought to disturb the brain
function of autistic children.
Eliminating gluten- based foods and dairy
products might lead to considerable improvements. ‘Leaky gut’ has been scientifically demonstrated to be
associated with the pathogenesis or promotion of
Crohn’s disease.
A ‘leaky gut’ can predispose to the
development of Crohn’s disease however whether this
process is the primary cause is still speculative.
