Weight loss update

Let’s face it weight loss is difficult.  When you’re overweight your physiology makes it even harder for you to lose weight.  In fact once you are fat your body conspires to make you fatter.  Insulin resistance, inflammation and reduced generation of heat to burn fat make weight loss terribly arduous.  Obese people have increased hunger after meals.  A large portion salad entrée before meals has been shown to reduce appetite.  For those who crave chocolates you should know that chocolate makers are totally aware that chocolate contains psychoactive substances including theobromine, a central nervous stimulant, anandamide, a cannabinoid and phenylethylamine, an amphetamine-like compound all of which help to fuel your desire for that taste of delicious chocolate.

High protein and low glycaemic index diets increase satiety.  High protein diets not only make you experience fullness after you’ve consumed less food they also increase thermogenesis.

Stress heads produce more of the hormone cortisol, which encourages eating and lowers a chemical called serotonin, which also leads to greater eating behaviour.

Alcohol encourages you to eat more by stimulating a hormone called ghrelin, which promotes hunger.  Alcohol also encourages overeating.

Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells, which tells us that we have eaten enough.  Obese people suffer from leptin resistance and they don’t have a signal indicating satiety.  This is called leptin resistance. Leptin resistance is caused by the hormone cortisol, the metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.  High trigylcerides, which is a form of fat and low levels of the amino acid tyrosine also promote leptin resistance.  Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil can lower triglycerides and these might improve leptin sensitivity.  Low glycaemic index foods and protein might also improve leptin sensitivity.

Soft drinks stimulate the production of triglycerides and the deposition of fat.
