The testosterone controversy rages on
A book recently released in the USA called Testosterone
and Aging written
by the Institute of Medicine, a government nonprofit
organization pours more fuel on the fire of the
testosterone controversy.
After an extensive reiview of all the scientific
evidence this book concludes that “ the trials that
have been conducted do not show definitively that there
are benefits of testosterone therpay for older men…the
committee recommends short-term efficasy trials to
determine if there are benefits of testosterone therapy
in older men.” In
article in Life Extension magazine February 2004
(www.lef.org) takes this book to task for being too
conservative and ignoring all the evidence connecting
low testosterone levels with reduced muscle mass, low o
bone mineral density, high blood pressure, an increase
in fat mass and a decline in mental function as well as
the relationship between testosterone supplementation
and an increase in libido, erectile function, muscle
mass and a decrease in fat mass.
There is a nice chapter in ‘Eternal Health’
available through this site on this very topic and I’m
releasing a book, which addresses this issue soon.
I will also be presenting a series of lectures at
the International Longevity Conference in March
of this year in Sydney (www.longevity-international.com).
