Whats New 2004

Further fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome updates

These two debilitating disorders are often found together.  I have had a number of questions about these two of late so I thought I’d put together some of the research I’ve come across in the recent editions of Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients’ February, March and April 2004 and a journal article in ‘Medical Hypothesis’ August 2003 as well as other pertinent journal reviews.  Here are the major findings:

  1. Low levels of DHEA, growth hormone as measured by IGF-1 and thyroid hormone resistance are implicated.  Thyroid hormone function can be evaluated by means of four consecutive morning temperature checks.  A normal temperature would be around 98.4 or 36.6.  Iron, vitamin A, zinc and selenium are needed to make thyroid hormone, specifically T3.  Lead and mercury can inhibit thyroid function, as can excessive levels of oestrogen, insulin and parathyroid hormone. DHEA and androstenediol deficiency has been associated with Sjogren’s syndrome in women, which has been linked with these disorders.
  2. Chronic infection with mycoplasma and rickettsia organisms needs to be eliminated.
  3. Heavy metal toxicity should be investigated.
  4. Free radical overload is another possible cause.
  5. The overgrowth of abnormal germs in the small bowel, excessive candida species and parasitic overgrowth also factor into the equation.
  6. Disordered sleep patterns can be corrected with a number of choices including 5-hydroxytryptophan, melatonin, theanine and the herbs wild lettuce, Jamaican dogwood, wild lettuce, passionflower, valerian and hops as suggested by Dr Jacob Teitelbaum.
  7. Nutritional deficiencies should be investigated.  Supplementing with magnesium combined with malic acid, zinc and selenium can be beneficial.
  8. Vitamin deficiencies and food additives have been implicated.
  9. Raw food, vegan diets have been shown to benefit fibromyalgia.
  10. Vitamin B12 injections can improve tiredness.
  11. Low iron and ferritin levels need to be corrected.
  12. Herbal adrenal tonics such as withania found in Neurazest advertised on this site and licorice, Korean ginseng and rehmannia can be helpful if adrenals are depleted.
  13. Coenzyme Q10 at a dose of 100 mg daily can improve energy.
  14. N-acetylcysteine can boost glutathoine levels, as can alpha-lipoic acid, whey protein and grape extract.  This can in turn improve liver function.
  15. Viruses are seen as a precipitating cause.  Anti-viral compounds include glycyrrhizin and lauric acid according to American nutritional expert Dr Shari Lieberman.
  16. Poor digestive function with inadequate production of hydrochloric acid and food allergy needs to be eliminated.
  17. Anti-inflammatory effects of quercetin, fish oil and herbal tonics such as ginger, turmeric and boswellia might be helpful. Histidine, GLA and zinc also have anti-inflammatory and pain reducing effects when used in combination.
