Enlargement of the prostate
Looking through the site and all the updates I realize
that I haven’t tackled this area for a while and
seeing it’s the most common problem that confronts the
aging male a review would be timely.
If you go to the ‘Men’s Health’ section via
the main menu on the left of your screen you can revise
this segment. As
far as diet is concerned it appears to be prudent to
limit consumption of animal fats such as meat and dairy
as well as margarines and vegetable oils and to replace
these with omega-3 fatty acids such as fish and flaxseed
oil. Maintaining
optimal weight and eating less if you have a tendency to
overindulge would also help.
While the precise
cause of prostatic enlargement has yet to be determined,
factors such as an increase in the hormone
dihydrotestosterone, which is made from testosterone,
free radical excess, inflammation, possibly too much
oestrogen and a host of other unknowns need to be
considered. For
those who would like to opt for natural remedies as
opposed to the pharmaceuticals such as finasteride
otherwise known as proscar and the alpha-blocker
tamsulosin, which is called flomax and the progression
to an operation if these don’t work, there are herbal
remedies that you can use.
These include saw palmetto, stinging nettle root
and pygeum africanum which scientific evidence tells us
are just as effective as their pharmaceutical
counterparts. The beauty of utilising these remedies is that they are
relatively side effect free as opposed to the problems
that finasteride and tamsulosin can generate especially
with regard to sexual function.
