The latest medical advances
Time magazine that bastion of all
that is new in the world had a recent review, January 19th
2003, of the latest medical advances. Here are some of
the more practical highlights:
- PET
(positive-emission tomography) an imaging technique
that shows the brain in action can now be used
together with spinal fluid tests to help diagnose
Alzheimer’s disease.
Up to now there has been no definitive
diagnosis of this disease.
- Vitamin
B12 and B6 may have a positive impact on the
progression of Alzheimer’s disease by lowering an
amino acid called homocysteine that is also
associated with blood clots. In addition to which
vitamin B12 may help beat depression and having good
blood levels of this vitamin along with vitamin B6
and folic acid reduced the risk of breast cancer in
some women. Remember
the product Neurazest (see New Product Release)
described on this site contains both vitamin B12 and
folic acid.
- Diets
high in vitamins C and E help to prevent stroke.
- Dark
chocolate can increase your antioxidant levels and
lower blood pressure.
- Cranberries
have the ability to boost HDL, the good cholesterol
and may also reduce the amount of damage that the
brain sustains after a stroke.
Aside from improving
mental function blueberries have the ability to keep the
arteries elastic thereby helping to prevent heart
disease.
