Managing psoriasis and eczema
the natural way
These two conditions can be extremely difficult to
manage. Although
these skin ailments have a different pathogenesis in
practical terms it often helps to apply the same
principles with regards to treatment.
Firstly dealing with food allergy/intolerance is
useful. With
regard to eczema milk, wheat, eggs, soya and peanuts are
the common offenders.
Chocolate, seafood and yeast might also be
implicated. There
is evidence that a gluten intolerance can precipitate
psoriasis. Gluten
is found in wheat, rye, oats and barley and a blood
test, which measures anti-gliadin antibodies will reveal
a gluten problem. Vegetarian diets benefit those with psoriasis.
Abnormal gut germs might be
implicated. Organisms
that have been found in stool cultures include Candida
species, Geotrichum and others.
Australian herbal expert Kerry Bone reports that
citrus seed extract has been used to treat abnormal
bowel germs.
What is equally important is the necessity for
ensuring adequate production of hydrochloric acid and
pancreatic enzymes.
Certain nutrient supplements might
help with these respective conditions. Although the
evidence is limited vitamin C, selenium, zinc, omega-3
and omega-6 fatty acids might be useful as far as eczema
is concerned as reported by nutritional expert Dr Melvyn
Werbach in the May 2003 edition of the Townsend letter.
A study mentioned in this same journal indicates
that high dose folic acid is beneficial in the treatment
of psoriasis.
I have also found that improving
liver function, using shark cartilage extract and
eliminating bowel parasites can lead to extremely
satisfying outcomes when dealing with psoriasis.
In summary what you need to do if
you are suffering from either of these conditions is
find a health practitioner who can adequately assess
your food allergies, digestive function, the composition
of your bowel flora and your liver function and then
institute the appropriate regimen including a nutrient
supplementation programme. This is the type of practice
that I follow and often the successes can be very
pleasing although it needs to be said that these are
never guaranteed.
