New blood test assesses the
presence of multiple sclerosis
Early diagnosis of
this debilitating illness can pose problems. Repeat MRI
scans may be necessary. According to research conducted
by the Department of Neurology at the University of
Innsbruck in Austria reviewed in the July 10 2003
edition of the New England Journal of Medicine blood
tests, which investigate antibodies to myelin
oligodendrocyte glycoprotein and myelin basic protein,
the insulation surrounding nerve fibres, are predictive
of the development of multiple sclerosis in just under
80% of cases. This
would allow for a new, inexpensive and precise method
for the prediction of early conversion to clinically
definite multiple sclerosis according to the authors of
this article.
