Are mobile phones dangerous?
An extensive review of all the
scientific data exploring the relationship between
mobile phone exposure and the development of serious
medical conditions in the winter edition of Anti-aging
medical news 2002 suggets that we should be wary of this
type of practice despite inconclusive findings.
The negative findings include the evidence of DNA
damage, alterations in the levels of amino acids
responsible for making brain chemicals that facilitate
communication between brain cells, increase in the
permeability of the blood brain barrier and elevation in
the levels of heat shock proteins that may lead to
cancer.
With regard to the development of
cancer which is needless to say the principal concern,
while research did show an increase in brain tumours on
the same side as the cellular phone had been held, a
large-scale study in Denmark did not find an increased
risk of brain tumours.
However further Swedish research did find a
higher incidence of brain tumours on the same side as
phone usage.
Further scientific studies have
revealed that mobile phones may compromise memory and
slow reaction time thought to result in the staggeringly
high percentage of accidents that are caused by driver
distractions. Further
evidence indicates that people who had used cellular
phones for as little as once a day had decreased levels
of melatonin.
Included in the tips for reducing
the negative effects of mobile phone usage are such
suggestions as reducing the length of incoming calls,
using a “speakerphone” option, selecting a phone
with an extendable antenna, opening the window when
using the phone in a vehicle although this is something
that you shouldn’t be doing in the first place, taking
your glasses off when making a call, using the
“filtered” version of the hands-free kit, utilising
those phones that have shields fitted atop the earpiece
of the phone and purchasing a new line of trousers
recently made available by Levi Strauss & Co which
have a lining that shields against radiation.
