Natural remedies for peripheral
neuropathy
I was recently asked by a patient whether there were any
natural remedies for peripheral neuropathy as this
condition can lead to a range a disabilities including
unremitting pain, the sensation of ‘pins and
needles’ and a host of other debilitating symptoms.
Here are a list of the natural remedies sourced from
scientific studies that might help:
- The
amino acids taurine and methionine have been shown
to be of some benefit.
- Beta-carotene
and the vitamins A, B1, C, D, E and K may also
improve symptoms.
- There
is some evidence that the antioxidants alpha-lipoic
acid and acetyl-L-carnitine have the ability to
reduce the discomfort associated with this disorder.
- Vitamin
B 12 in the form of methylcobalamin, fish oil and
evening primrose oil can be useful.
Interestingly in a randomised, double-blind,
placebo-controlled study vitamin B12 injections was
shown to reduce low back pain.
-
Correcting magnesium and zinc depletion is
another measure that might be helpful.
- Animal
studies have shown that soy-containing diets can
alleviate some of the disability associated with
neuropathy.
- Coeliac
disease can manifest in the form of this disease and
this can be eliminated with the necessary
investigations including a blood test for anti-gliadin
and endomysial antibodies.
- Investigating
lead and mercury toxicity would be another
investigation that might yield positive outcomes.
