Boosting your immune system with
tea
When you find yourself in times of trouble all you might
have to do is brew a cup of your favourite tea. According to a recent trial after a mere 10 days a group of
tea drinkers and here we are talking about 600ml of
Lipton tea daily experienced improvements in their
immune systems due to the three-fold increase of a
germ-fighting substance known as interferon gamma. In
the same trial a group of coffee drinkers had no immune
boosting benefits. Fascinatingly the tea used in this study was of the black
variety whereas most of the benefits attributed to this
beverage have been identified with green tea.
Green tea contains antioxidant rich substances
called catechins while black tea leaves undergo
extensive fermentation, which leads to the oxidation of
the majority of catechins resulting in a new brand of
antioxidants called theaflavins and thearubigens.
Green tea consumption has been
associated with a reduction in certain cancers and in
animal models has demonstrated anti-cancer effects
against a range of malignancies including breast, colon,
prostate, pancreatic, lung, stomach and ovarian cancer
to name just a few. Green tea has also been shown to reduce LDL-cholesterol
oxidation, thought to be one of the events that initiate
heart disease. Arthritis
and gout and other inflammatory disorders have been
found to respond positively to green tea. As fas as
boosting the immune system is concerned there is
in-vitro evidence, which means in a test tube, that
green tea has antiviral and antibacterial potential.
There is evidence linking the
consumption of black tea with a reduction in
osteoporosis.
