Whats New 2003
Further multiple sclerosis (MS)
updates:
I have reviewed multiple sclerosis
recently on this site but as the November 2003 edition
of the Townsend Letter for Doctor’s and Patients
contains some useful management strategies here are some
more ideas for managing this terrible illness:
A recent small-scale
study has demonstrated that a group of non-pregnant
women who took 8mg of oestriol for 6 months experienced
an improvement in their
- symptoms
and a decrease in nervous system lesions. This study
suggests that oestriol treatment might help those
women with relapsing remitting MS.
- The
low fat diet with avoidance of red meat might be
beneficial.
- Recent
research suggests that the organism Chlamydia
pneumoniae might be the cause of multiple
sclerosis. Although
these findings are preliminary treatment with the
antibiotic doxycycline specifically indicated for
the eradication of this bug might lead to clinical
improvements. This
has yet to be carried out in long-term trials.
- American
expert neurologist David Perlmutter has found
elevated levels of candida albicans antibodies in MS
sufferers. He
suggests that if blood tests are positive then stool
tests should follow which assess what is termed as
the dysbiosis index.
- Perlmutter
endorses supplementation with fish oil and evening
primrose oil and advises a low fat vegetarian diet.
Some would argue that omega-3 fish oils are
preferable to evening primrose oil supplements as a
preponderance of omega-6 fatty acids is thought to
be a problem as fas as MS is concerned.
In truth there are scientific studies, which
substantiate supplementation with both of these
vitamins.
- Vitamin
D supplementation might be beneficial, as might
vitamins C and E as well as vitamin B12 both via the
oral and injectable route.
Perlmutter suggests that oral NADH (5mg twice
daily) should be taken together with B12.
- The
antioxidants alpha-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q 10 and
N-acetyl-cysteine, the herb gingko biloba, the
nutrient phosphatidylserine and intravenous
glutathione all have their place in the management
protocol according to Perlmutter. Remember the
alpha-lipoic acid and gingko biloba are found in
Neurazest.
- Perlmutter
also uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy to achieve
significant clinical improvements.
