Natural remedies for Lymphoma.

I’ve recently managed a patient with lymphoma who was referred to me by an oncologist as this particular patient expressed a desire to explore natural remedies.  While this approach was not intended to replace conventional medical treatment including chemotherapy it certainly provided the option to utilise natural therapies.  I also thought that it would be a good idea to update my knowledge in this area.  For those of you who elect to use these remedies please be advised that the intention here is not to replace medical treatment with this protocol rather this provides you with another string that you can add to your bow to combat this illness.  Here are the therapies you can use:

  1. Dimethylsulfoxide, (DMSO) quercetin, mistletoe, trans-retinoic acid and the Chinese herbal formulation dan shen have been used to treat lymphoma in human trials and in the laboratory context when these agents are added to cancer cell lines.  Vitamin D is a differentiating agent, which has the ability to change cancer cells into normal cells.
  2. Piceatannol, an analogue of resveratrol or red grape has been shown to cause lymphoma cells to commit suicide in the laboratory context.  Resveratrol has similar capabilities.
  3. In the case of ovarian cancer including vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, coenzyme Q10 and a multivitamin/mineral complex with chemotherapy improved patient outcomes quite considerably.  The same regimen could be used with regard to lymphoma treatment.
  4. While some studies how that taking the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid might be helpful and can be incorporated to fortify chemotherapeutic agents such as doxorubicin as well as boosting the anti-cancer activity of vitamin C and inhibiting the growth of abnormal lymphocytes others suggest that this nutrient might increase glutathione in cancer cells which would render them more resistant to chemotherapy and differentiating agents such as vitamin D.  My impression is that the jury is still out and therefore it might be wiser to omit this agent while giving chemotherapy. Interestingly vitamin C has the ability to reduce glutathione in cancer cells making them more vulnerable.
