Attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD)
update
This disorder is thought to affect up to 10% of
children. While
standard medical treatments include central nervous
system stimulants such as Ritalin and other recently
introduced pharmaceutical treatments the October 2003
edition of the Townsend letter for Doctors and Patients
looks at other strategies that might be employed to
manage this condition.
These include:
- Investigating
heavy metal toxicity.
Elevated lead levels have been found in those
children with ADHD.
- Correcting
zinc, magnesium and essential fatty acid
deficiencies.
- Herbal
remedies including gingko, bacopa, ginseng and
valerian, which might be beneficial.
Remember that Neurazest described on this
site contains both gingko and bacopa.
- The
nutrient phosphatidylserine, which has been shown to
help.
- Eliminating
food allergy/intolerance especially to dairy and
gluten containing foods.
