Update on Parkinson’s
treatments
I was recently consulted by a patient suffering from
this awful disease so I thought it would be timely to
review the current management strategies and research
protocols with respect to Parkinson’s disease.
Just to refresh your memories I have reviewed
this topic before on this site and the principal natural
remedies used to manage this disease include alpha-lipoic
acid and gingko biloba (found in Neurazest) NADH,
coenzyme Q10, phophatidylserine, N-acetylcysteine,
acetyl-L-carnitine, and vitamin D.
Fascinating new research indicates
that high dose riboflavin (vitamin B2) at a dose of 30mg
three times daily together with the elimination of red
meat has the ability to promote the recovery of some
motor function.
In animal models of Parkinson’s
disease creatine, coenzyme Q10, gingko biloba and
acetyl-L-carnitine have found to be effective
treatments.
Alpha-lipoic acid has been shown to
prevent the depletion of glutathione thought to be a
major protective antioxidant with regard to brain
function.
Selenium may slow down the
progression of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s
disease.
Melatonin and deprenyl may be a
promising synergistic strategy as far as treatment is
concerned.
Coenzyme Q10 at a dose of 360mg
daily has the ability to reduce symptoms and high dose
vitamin E (1000IU daily) may be a useful therapeutic
strategy for the management of Parkinson’s disease.
Green tea is another
treatment option.
