Managing high blood pressure
naturally-further guidelines
In the August edition 2003 of the
Life Extension journal natural remedies are proposed for
managing high blood pressure.
For those contemplating such an approach you
should review your desires with your physician and you
should only contemplate altering your medication under
medical supervision. Included in this protocol is the
following:
- A
diet that is high in fruit and vegetables rich in
potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Replacing meat and dairy with fish or tofu
and restricting salt to less than one teaspoon daily
is essential.
- Smoking
cessation, weight loss and regular exercise are
considered mandatory.
- Vitamin
E supplementation has been shown in animal trials to
be of benefit but human trials have yet to
substantiate this.
- Randomized
placebo-controlled trials have demonstrated that
500mg a day of vitamin C leads to a significant
reduction in blood pressure.
- Arginine-containing
foods such as nuts and seeds lead to a lowering of
blood pressure.
Coenzyme Q10, garlic
and fish oil supplementation have been shown in
placebo-controlled trials to reduce systolic and
diastolic blood pressure.
