Question: I have been taking 100 micrograms of Thyroxine (Synthroid) for acute under-active thyroid for the past 6 months. I've just gone back on the contraceptive pill and take both of the pills first thing in the morning 1 hr before food. I was wondering whether the contraceptive pill could be effecting the absorption of Thyroxine. I'm feeling tired since taking it but I could just be overworked?
Answer: There is a possible competing effect so taking these apart would be wise. Far more importantly is the fact that the contraceptive pill can deplete you of a whole host of nutrients including vitamins B2, B6, B12, C, folic acid, zinc and magnesium and this can reduce your energy levels dramatically. Equally the contraceptive pill increases a substance called binding globulin, which renders thyroid hormone less effective indicating that you would need a review of your treatment regimen by your doctor.
Question: I am a 60 year old woman and wonder how I can prevent black spots and wrinkles that are appearing on my face.
Answer:Applying vitamin A and vitamin C as well as alpha-hydroxy acids to the skin might help. Antioxidants like alpha-lipoic acid and coenzyme Q10 can also be used topically. Hormone treatments like oestrogen when applied to the skin can also be used to manage wrinkles. ‘You have the power’ has an excellent chapter which deals with the management of skin aging both externally and internally.
Question: I've noticed looking at some of your articles that soy is recommended. I used to drink soy-milk. (Bonsoy- apparently made in the traditional Japanese way) I also used to have soy protein powder. I found that taking soy products depressed my thyroid gland. I've noticed a significant improvement in my thyroid symptoms since discontinuing with soy products. I would appreciate your comments.
Answer: Incredibly there is not much research on this with most studies examining whether soy has any detrimental effect on those who have normal thyroid function and it doesn’t, except in those who are iodine deficient. This means that if you do consume soy ensure you also consume iodine in sufficiency. What soy does is increase binding globulin and as is the case with the contraceptive pill, this would depress thyroid function. Soy might also lower absorption of thyroxine or Synthroid, which is used to treat an under-active thyroid. There is some evidence that soy can prevent prostate and breast cancer, which is probably why I’ve endorsed it.
Question: Can you take DHEA and HGH together? I am already taking DHEA with a natural Hormone. I also have no thyroid and take armour. I try to watch what I take and eat. I work 8 to 12 hr. days sitting. I take blood pressure medication, a probiotic, Detral LA and a multivitamin.
Answer:When you take these hormones together, which is acceptable, if your body is not producing enough of these, it would be wise to have regular checks for breast and prostate cancer. ‘You have the power,’ the latest edition of which is now available on Amazon, explains how this can be done, as well as ways to help prevent these cancers. If you are overweight and you take DHEA and HGH (growth hormone) together then have your blood glucose metabolism checked before and after you embark on this treatment, as these hormones might worsen your glucose or sugar metabolism, making weight loss more difficult.
Question: My health has dramatically depreciated over the past two years. Three years ago I began taking Lipitor, which is a statin medication, as I have high cholesterol levels and from then on, my health started to get worse. Now, I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Also tests have shown that my IGF-1 level is 5nmol/L when normal levels are supposed to be 9-38 nmol/L. I can barely hold a cup without my hands hurting. Would growth hormone help me?
Answer: Interestingly Lipitor, one of the statin medications used to lower cholesterol can compromise liver function. As IGF-1 is made in the liver, this might be one of the reasons your levels are low. Growth hormone might be helpful especially for osteoporosis but the benefits might take a while to be realised.
