Ever since the discovery
of the dreaded HIV virus the race has been on to find
a way to deal with this awesome killer.
Medical science is
still struggling to come to grips with the constant
challenges that HIV poses to the immune system. The
outstanding feature of HIV infection is the decline
in circulating helper T-cells.
In particular it is
believed that TH1 levels decline while those of TH2
tend to predominate. This has lead researchers to search
for a way to enhance TH1 levels while reducing those
of TH2.
In a five year trial
began in 1993 Professor Patrick Bouic and his team administered
sterols and sterolins to a group of patients diagnosed
HIV positive and compared the response of this group
to that of another set of patients who did not receive
the supplementary nutrients.
Professor Bouic and
his team measured certain key markers of HIV infection
including helper T-cell levels, the presence of interleukin-6,
a pro-inflammatory cytokine and the number of cells
infected with the HIV virus.
After six months the
research team were obliged to offer the treatment to
the control group as their helper T-cell count was dropping
while that of the group receiving sterols and sterolins
did not decline. In addition to which interleukin-6,
the pro-inflammatory cytokine which exacerbates HIV
infection decreased in the group receiving the added
nutrients.
In another study the
same team showed that the viral load of the HIV virus
could be reduced by sterols and sterolins presumably
due to the improved activity of the TH1 cells.
The ability to maintain
protective levels of TH1 cells has positive long-term
implications for sufferers of HIV infection.
Professor Luc Montagnier,
who identified the HIV virus has recently initiated
a trial in Paris whereby sterols and sterolins will
be administered to a group of HIV positive patients.
There is every indication
that these nutrients will become part of the routine
protocol worldwide for the management of HIV infection.
Hepatitis C is another chronic infection which medical
science has struggled to come to grips with. For some,
this disease will result in a relentless descent into
cirrhosis and liver failure.
Sterols and sterolins
can reduce the liver damage caused by the hepatitis
C virus by boosting TH1 cells which are geared to attack
the virus.
In the "Immune System
Cure," the authors, Professor Bouic and Lorna Vanderhaeghe
report that abnormal liver enzymes which are a marker
of liver inflammation soon return to normal once patients
commence sterols and sterolins.
There are even indications
that the levels of the virus within the plasma are reduced
once these nutrients are introduced. Tuberculosis and
cervical lesions caused by the human papilloma virus
which can culminate in cancer of the cervix are further
conditions which respond positively to sterols and sterolins.
Chronic fatigue sufferers
often have immune systems which are out of balance with
increased levels of B-cells and auto-antibodies report
Bouic and Vanderhaeghe in the "Immune System Cure."
Sterols and sterolins
realign this imbalance by increasing the levels of TH1
cells while reducing the pro-inflammatory cytokines
characteristic of the TH2 immune response.
This allows the body
to deal appropriately with infection while reducing
any allergic or autoimmune processes.
