QUESTION 1:  Saliva results indicate consistent, moderately high cortisol levels, despite my low stress life. Have you any suggestions re supplements to assist in lowering this, as I am worrying about hippocampus damage. I am on progesterone cream, take fish oil, gingko and vitamins C, A, D and E currently.

Answer:  There is a nutrient called phosphatidylserine that I describe in my book ‘Eternal Health’ that has the ability to lower cortisol levels and you should be able to purchase this supplement from your local health food store.  You can also take the hormone DHEA if your levels are low as this might also have the effect of reducing cortisol levels.  You should ensure that your cortisol level is not above the normal range as there could be reasons for this, which would need to be investigated by your doctor.

QUESTION 2: My mother was just diagnosed with emphysema, do you know of any alternative treatments, herbs, inhalers she can do or any sites where I can find alternative treatment information?

Answer: It would be a good idea to consult with a naturopathic physician as there are herbs, which can open up your mother’s airways such as the herb wild cherry and an herbal tonic might be of benefit.  Nutrients such as vitamins A and C, the mineral magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil and N-acetylcysteine can be helpful.  If you go to the website www.lef.org and enter this condition you will find a protocol that is most useful.

QUESTION 3:  I have acne along my jaw line and recently underwent an operation to remove cysts from both my ovaries. The Doctor has put me on hormonal treatments and the pill -specifically Minerva (for acne)- I've been on this for 2 and half months and haven't seen any improvement. It goes away for a week and two weeks before my periods they start to come out again. I've bought Milk thistle to cleanse my liver.  I eat fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid dairy products.  But still they persist.  Should I hang in there until the pill starts to work, the diet and the liver tonic, or is there something else I can try?

Answer: There is a condition known as insulin resistance, which leads to hormonal imbalances especially an excess of male hormones that might be the underlying cause of your condition.  To discover whether you have this metabolic disorder you would have to undergo a blood test, which measures your insulin and glucose levels followed by the ingestion of a sugar drink and a repeat blood test, which measures the same parameters one and a half hours later.   High insulin levels before and after the sugar drink would substantiate this hypothesis.  There are natural ways to manage this condition including the low carbohydrate diet and nutrients such as chromium and alpha-lipoic acid, which have the ability to lower insulin levels thereby correcting the hormonal imbalance that you may be suffering from.

QUESTION 4:  My blood pressure is very high.  Is there something that I can take?

Answer:  Regular exercise, maintaining your optimal weight and meditating regularly will help to lower your blood pressure.  Eating 5—10 serves of fruit and vegetables daily and taking supplements of magnesium, vitamin C, red grape extract, Coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, fish oil, the herb hawthorn and garlic would also be beneficial.  There is an herb called butterbur, which might lower blood pressure.  Have your thyroid hormone levels measured.  If these are low high blood pressure might be the consequence.  Equally high levels of the hormone cortisol can have adverse effects on your blood pressure.
