Questions and Answers Segment

Your questions answered every 2 weeks. If you have a question for Dr Elstein, click here.

QUESTION 1:  I heard that if you swallowed a man’s semen, you can lose a pound or two. But then I also heard that it is really high in calories, so high that it gives you the calories you’re supposed to have for 2 days or more. So I was just wondering if you knew what one was true.

Answer:  The average ejaculate contains 5—7 calories and around 1—2 grams of protein making this a pretty unsupportable way to lose weight not to mention the possibility of participating in unsafe sex if you are not familiar with the sexual history of your partner.

QUESTION 2:  I have fine lines around my eyes and on my forehead. How do I get rid of these?

Answer:  Retin-A, which is available on prescription and has to be used at night in very small amounts can work quite well to eradicate fine lines.  You can also utilise vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid.

QUESTION 3: I’m a pharmecy student and have alot of problems in finding information about anti-aging plant extracts because I want to apply this formula on rats and find out about its biochemical and physiological properties.

Answer:  I’m not one to encourage experimentation on animals but in this case it has been demonstrated that red grape extract or resveratrol has been found to prolong the life of fruit flies so it might work for rats as well.

QUESTION 4: I have slight acid reflux and have been put on both Prevacid and Ptotonix.  I have recently noticed that I have a horrible taste in my mouth.  It's almost hard to describe.  It's kind of like a lingering chemical taste in the upper back part of my mouth.  Do you think this could be from the medication?

Answer:  It certainly could be.  You might want to try omitting each of these medications in turn and seeing what happens.  I also wonder whether you have developed a zinc deficiency.  I have found that acid reflux often improves when food allergies are investigated and the offending foods are removed from your diet.

QUESTION 5: I started taking Pravachol 2 weeks ago and I exercise at the gym (walking and weights) 5 days a week.  In the last week I have gained 5 lbs.(legs and feet are swollen) and my knees hurt a lot.  Should I be going off the Pravachol?

Answer:  Some folk react to these cholesterol lowering statin drugs in an adverse way or you might have a reaction to this particular medication.  You should have your liver and kidney function tested with the appropriate blood tests.  Creatine kinase, a muscle enzyme should also be tested.  All of these investigations can be performed by your doctor.  When you take these pharmaceuticals it is always wise to supplement with coenzyme Q 10.

QUESTION 6: I’m impressed by your website but given the distance and the frequency of tests, your spa is not practical for me. Who can you recommend in California with the similar approach and knowledge for full testing and anti-aging program? Additionally, what do you think about taking Aminotrope-7 and Anterior Pituitary Peptides as a prevention and HGH precursors/ Specifically Symbiotropin?

Answer: The website www.worldhealth.net has a list of all the doctors around the world who practice anti-aging medicine.  Aminotrope-7 and Symbiotropin are growth hormone promoting agents but I’m not totally convinced these products actually work.  Equally the pituitary peptides might not be that influential.  A good way to find out is to have a 24-hour urine growth hormone assessment and an IGF-1 level measured before and after you take these promoting agents.

QUESTION 7:  I had Hashimoto's at the age of 9 and had my thyroid and parathyroid removed.  My oroxine has just been adjusted and I am taking an increased dose.  My weight is increasing with no other changes in lifestyle.  Could this be the cause?  Also I developed epilepsy a few years after the operation, is their a connection?

Answer:  You need to have your thyroid function assessed.  This can be done by means of a blood test, which also assesses T3 levels.  You should also take your morning temperature over three consecutive mornings.  If it is consistently at 96—97 fahrenheit then your thyroid treatment is sub-optimal.  I’m not aware of a connection between the operation you mention and the development of epilepsy.

QUESTION 8: I have been losing hair for the last 2 years.  I have had my thyroids tested numerous times and the results are normal. I am also menopausal and  I am presently taking 10 mg DHEA and no HRT. I have serious night sweats and hotflashes. What could be going on with me?  Am I totally hormonally imbalanced or is this what turning 50 is about?

Answer:  I always wonder whether standard blood tests for thyroid function are adequate.  I always measure T3 levels which is not always included in routine testing. Morning temperature evaluation is also important.  It is possible that you are oestrogen deficient and have a testosterone excess which would account for your hot flashes and hair loss.  I suggest you have all your hormones measured.

QUESTION 9:  I believe I suffer from Peyronie's disease and am not sure...my penis has what seems to be a bit of a curvature to it. It bends off to the left. I was just wondering does it make a difference in which way it bends and if not how can i tell for sure if i have it.

Answer:  This does sound like Peyronie’s disease.  There are some good treatments for this including vitamin E and the medication colchicine commonly used for gout as well as verapamil a heart medication that can be incorporated in the form of a cream.

QUESTION 10: I have vitiligo and just started taking polypodium leucotomos one day ago along with this I am taking vitamin/mineral supplement B6 and muira puama extract.  I’m curious if any if these interfere or counteract the other?

Answer:  No these supplements are all compatible. There is also a study which shows that 120mg of the herb gingko biloba taken daily might also be helpful.

QUESTION 11: I am 43 and considered to be healthy. I am taking multi-vitamins, 7-Keto DHEA 25 mg; N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid daily in addition to symbiotropins by Neutraceuticals that have aminotrope-7 and 4200 units Anterior Pituitary Peptites. I am not sure about effectives of the last product as it costs $70 per month. What is your opinion?  Are there any side effects that I should be aware about?

Answer:  I’m not totally convinced about 7-Keto DHEA.  It has been found to elevate lipoprotein (a), which is a risk factor for heart disease and I suggest that you have this tested.  The hormone promoting agents might also not be that effective and one way you can find this out is to have your hormones measured.
