QUESTION 1:  I have had psoriasis for the last 16 years and have used many treatments only to find many don't work as they claim, or once you stop,it comes back straight away. I have found a web site www.organichope.com that claims it has a product call Kalawalla (Polypodium Leucotomos) that can heal my psoriasis after about 3 months taking the tablets. My question is, have you heard of this product and does it's claims stand true? Or is there another alternative?

Answer:  There is some scientific evidence that polypodium can be used to effectively manage psoriasis so it might be worthwhile giving this treatment a try.  I also institute allergy tests as food allergy might be implicated as might imperfect liver function, abnormal germs in the bowel and increased intestinal permeability otherwise known as the ‘leaky gut’ syndrome.  If appropriate gluten-free diets as well as avoiding red meat and dairy products together with supplements of omega-3 essential fatty acids and a herbal tonic to improve liver function can be very effective.  If you proceed to the ‘What’s new’ segment on my site and go to 15th January and 15th may 2003 you will find further useful management strategies.

QUESTION 2:  I'm a fit 65-year old but to sustain my libido I have been taking a product containing epimedium sagittatum. It has proved effective, but I'm concerned that it may have accelerated the loss of hair on my head. I understand that the product stimulates testosterone production, and wonder whether it might also produce dihydrotestosterone - which seems to be a stimulant for hair loss and also gives rise to prostate problems.

Answer:  Epimedium is purported to increase testosterone and you might be one of those people whose enzyme systems are geared up to manufacture dihydrotestosterone from testosterone.  You can take another herb saw palmetto to block this reaction.  Soy also helps in this area as well as normalising your zinc levels and a small dose of progesteronewould equally be of benefit.
