QUESTION 1:  I've had chronic heartburn and reflux for more than 3 months. I did have H.pylori but homeopathic drops cleared that up. I'm taking Pariet without much relief. Could something else be causing these symptoms? Do you have any other suggestions?

Answer:  I have had some success treating food allergy/intolerance, which often leads to relief of symptoms.  I had a patient who had similar complaints and once it was discovered that he had a yeast problem via a blood test which measured candida antibodies and he was placed on a yeast-free diet plus herbal remedies and acidophilus to neutralise his yeast overgrowth he experienced a significant improvement in his symptoms.   A gluten intolerance should also be explored via a blood test, which quantifies gliadin antibodies.

QUESTION 2: I am almost 19 in fact my birthday is this month and I just recently bought the Clarins skin care products for my face. I need to know at what age should I start to use anti-ageing creams? Am I too young now? Some say you should start from the minute you hit 20.

Answer:  Sure you can start using them as long as you don’t spend to much time in the sun which is the biggest enemy of the skin and you eat skin-friendly foods such as fruit and vegetables, a fair amount of protein found in fish, eggs, lean meat, lentils and soy products as well as the essential fatty acids found in fish, avocado, olives and nuts.

QUESTION 3: In February of 2003, I developed arthritis from a streptococcal virus.   I have been told by doctors that it is both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.  After many unhappy results with modern medicine I was referred to a naturopath and I am taking antioxidants and Leucostat (Polypodium Leucotomos) but when I add glucosamine my symptoms become worse. Is it known if these two products to react against each other or could I be allergic to glucosamine?

Answer:  I can’t really explain this.  Glucosamine has no documented interaction with antioxidants or polypodium.  I guess some adverse reaction to glucosamine is a possibility.
