QUESTION 1:  I have a husband (66y/0) who has been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) and usual interstitial pneumonitis (UIP).  He has started therapy consisting of prednisone 100 mg QD.  Is Moducare indicated in a patient taking prednisone?

Answer:  Moducare is a remedy, which has a modulating effect on the immune system.  Combining this with prednisone is not a strategy that I have utilised although I don’t believe they would clash.  I suggest that you bring this to the attention of your doctor before you commence this approach.

QUESTION 2:  I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have read that some herbs can help with this condition when trying to conceive. What are your thoughts on herbal treatment when trying to conceive?

Answer:  I approach polycystic ovarian syndrome from a different vantage point.  One of the hypotheses that attempts to explain this condition is the idea that an underlying metabolic disorder known as insulin resistance is the primary cause.  To find out whether you have such a disorder you would need to have blood tests, which assess your insulin and glucose levels before and after a glucose drink as well as your cholesterol and triglyceride levels.  This would need to be done by a physician who is sensitive to such an approach.  The idea is that if you correct insulin resistance then you will be going a long way to resolving polycystic ovarian syndrome.  Offcourse you can try herbs such as vitex agnus-castus, red sage and peony.  Once again you should find a practitioner who is experienced in the application of these remedies.

QUESTION 3: I had shingles 6 mths ago, following found I had raised ANA's (320 as at Nov 02) & was developing a connective tissue disease as told by Dr's.  Current symptoms tired, headaches, fuzziness, aches/pains, nausea, sore throats, pain in ribs, irritable bowel etc. etc.  This week found out I have Candida/leaky gut & my liver is not functioning to well.  Advised to start Nystatin, go off OCP (I have) and embark on sugar & yeast free diet & take some supplements.  Is there anything else I can do I want to take control and avoid further health problems?  (I have 2 kids, 7 & 3 & finding it hard to keep up with what I could do before.)

Answer:  Certainly you are suffering from complex issues.  I suggest you have food allergies/intolerance investigated including gluten, which can be established with an anti-gliadin antibody test as well as dairy allergies. You should also have your hormone levels assessed including DHEA, cortisol, thyroid hormone and testosterone.  Abnormal germs may be present in your bowel in addition to candida overgrowth and a comprehensive stool test would be helpful in this regard.  Heavy metal overload can also precipitate a candida problem and an analysis of your mercury, zinc and aluminium levels would also be a good idea.  This can be done by means of a hair analysis.  Increased intestinal permeability and poor digestion and absorption of nutrients also need to be investigated.

QUESTION 4:  I have a thyroid disease which is Graves disease and/or hypothyroid.  I have gained a lot of weight with this. I am at my wits end.  I cant seem to loose any weight.  I am going to order a weight loss product called pentabisol.  What do you think I should do?

Answer:  I would like to know whether your thyroid disorder has been adequately managed.  You should also have your other hormone levels assessed as these may be compromised as well.  I have often found that insulin is a hormone, which needs to be factored into this equation.  Food allergy is another issue, which needs to be addressed.

QUESTION 5: I was diagnosed with CFS over five years ago: treatment to date has not been successful.  My doctor has just started me on SciTropin HGH.  What starting dosage would you recommend for a person with my background?

Answer:  ¾ of an international unit daily would be a reasonable dose with which to commence.  The good news is that you can now have your growth hormone levels evaluated by means of a 24-hour urine test.

QUESTION 6:  Where can one buy sterols and sterolins as a supplement?  I have checked on the net and I cannot find any outlets in Australia.

Answer: You will have to utilise the website www.thorne.com where you will find a product called moducare made up of sterols and sterolins.
