QUESTION 1:  I had three of my wisdom teeth extracted 5 months ago. Only the bottom right was surgically removed and developed dry socket.  My extraction areas are still sensitive especially the tooth that developed dry socket (throbs). Oral surgeon says that it is healing.  But now I developed a dry mouth, tongue is sensitive, coughing up a clear salty mucous, a dry deep cough, feels like I'm swallowing chunks of skin, feels like fur balls stuck in throat, voice is hoarse, tightness in chest and difficulty breathing, inflamed salivary glands back of palate of throat, (looks like tiny pimples, goosebumps), and I lost 18 lbs.  Could it be acid reflux or something else?

Answer:  Acid reflux is a possibility.  You might also have a viral illness with swollen glands and the other symptoms you are displaying.  You really should bring this to the attention of your doctor as your weight loss and the tightness in your chest really needs to be investigated.

QUESTION 2: My question is about STDs. I have had herpes for 16 years and have kept myself isolated pretty much of that time as far as any social life. Does the shedding process get less the longer time goes by?   If you could give me some positive feedback on this subject I would very much appreciate it. I also wanted to know if there are any clinical trials going at this time in the state of MO. or Ok.

Answer:  There is some evidence that the shedding process does dissipate over time.  There are medications you can take to suppress any outbreaks such as acyclovir and others and these are all usually pretty effective.  Natural remedies such as lysine, creatine and red grape extract also known as resveratrol can be used for the same purpose.  A low arginine diet, which means limiting nuts and seeds, can also be helpful.  As far as I can see it isolation is not really necessary.

QUESTION 3 I have been suffering with a very bad under active thyroid now for 4 years.  Till today the Dr's can't stabilize my goitre as if fluctuates very badly.   I wake up with puffy eyes, swollen hands and feet.  I’m very tired, picked up a lot of weight.  Before when I was on 3xEltroxin tabs /day my weight was ok, I was not puffy, I did not have these problems then the Dr put me back onto 1x tab /day, since then I have been feeling terrible.  Please help me I have decided to go back onto 3x Eltroxins a day, as this is the only dose that is helping me.  I really need your advise about this.

Answer:  I’d be curious as to why your doctor lowered your dose.  If three tablets worked for you then this may be the way you have to go but I would strongly advice that you bring this to the attention of your doctor.

QUESTION 4:  My father has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and it has spread to most of his bones. He is on hormone therapy in the form of tablets and an implant. He has also seen a naturopath who has requested an Estrogen 2 & 16 test and has given him Saw palmetto, Nettle, pumpkin seeds and zinc to take for his prostate. If the results of the test show an estrogen 16 dominance he can take a broccoli extract and Japanese mushroom treatment that apparently kills cancer cells. Is this all that he can do or do you know of  other medical or alternative treatments that may be successful? Would greatly appreciate a response.

Answer:  You need to be careful with zinc, as there is some evidence that the presence of excess zinc is associated with disorders of the prostate.  The following might help his situation: green tea, grape seed extract, Tahitian noni juice, Royal Tongan limu juice, fish oil, silibinin, indole-3 carbinol, vitamin D3, lycopene, vitamin E, resveratrol, vitamin C, quercetin, selenium, coenzyme Q10, maitake mushroom extract and the hormone melatonin.  ‘Equiguard’ a dietary supplement comprised of standardized extracts from nine herbs including epimedium brevicornum, morindae officinalis, rosa laevigatae, chingii hu, schisandra chinensis, ligustrum lucidum, cuscuta chinensis, psoralea corylifolia and astragalus membranaceus has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. However this formulation has yet to be trialed on cancer patients.
