QUESTION 1:  About 5 years ago I noticed some white spot in my legs and some discoloration in my face, which is not much noticeable now. I visited a skin specialist and he said is Vitiligo and there is no cure for this decease but he did prescribed me some liquid to be applied on the skin and then stay in the sun for 30 minutes. This treatment made my problem worse. I am taking all kind of vitamins, including folic acid and selenium but the problem continues.   I am so desperate because of these horrible white patches in my skin.
Could you please tell me if there is any hope in recovering the colour of my skin?  Is there any treatment that you know I can follow, or is there any doctor that has discovered a cure for vitiligo?

Answer:  Recent scientific evidence indicates that a drug called tacrolimus used topically leads to repigmentation.  While these trials were done on a small scale this news is very exciting.  You would have to get you doctor to prescribe this medication, which can then be reformulated by your pharmacist into a topical treatment.  Please let me know whether this is successful.

QUESTION 2: I am taking .175 Synthroid each day.  I recently purchase Priority One Thyroid Plus.  Will you tell me what strength that would be in comparison to Synthroid?

Answer:  From my research it would appear that two tablets of this supplement taken in the morning would be a reasonable substitute. You should monitor your response and increase your dosage if you start to manifest symptoms of low thyroid function.  However I would suggest that you institute this kind a changeover under the guidance of your doctor.

QUESTION 3: My testes and penis sometimes ache.  I have had cystoscopy etc and this condition has been called referred pain from elsewhere.  There are no visible signs.  Any ideas?

Answer:  I have had one patient who manifested a similar complaint and when I removed yeast from his diet and put him on a programme to treat what is known as candidiasis or yeast overgrowth his symptoms abated and he was extremely grateful.  This could be your fundamental problem and I suggest that you find a physician who is familiar with this approach and give it a go.

QUESTION 4:  I have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis of the back.  I was given celebrex and panadeine forte to take for the pain and I also take osteoeze everyday, but this doesn't seem to be helping.  Can suggest anything else that may help. It was suggested by a friend to take Cosamin DS as the chondroitin is made from bovine and it may help.  What do you suggest?  When I am working at my job the pain is unbearable.   I use heat packs for some of the days, as I hate taking too many painkillers.  I get a bit of relief if I rest, but I can only do this on the weekends. Can you help please?

Answer: I presume you have reviewed all the options with your doctor including the surgical and non-surgical approach to this condition.   This can be an extremely painful disorder and my heart goes out to you, as the suffering can be immense. You can try supplements, which contain chondroitin and glucosamine sulphate, as these may be helpful.

QUESTION 5:  I have recently moved to the USA and my question is do you know of a doctor here near San Diego who practises like you do?  Can you tell me of something I can take for high blood pressure?  I’ve always had a very good pressure but now all of a sudden my blood pressure is 150 over 106.

Answer:  If you contact a college based in Melbourne, Australia called the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine on 3-95896088 they have a database of all the doctors around the world who incorporate a similar approach in their clinics.  You should have your hormone levels assessed especially testosterone, thyroid hormone and insulin.  Weight loss, meditation, exercise, eating five serves of fruit and vegetables daily as well as supplements of vitamin C and coenzyme Q10 might prove helpful. Whatever approach is adopted you would have to ensure that your blood pressure is maintained in the normal range.
