SUMMARY
OF RADIO BROADCAST - HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INTERVIEW OF
THE WEEK WITH TERRY GOLOMBICK
Terri
Golombick is a qualified Nutritionist with a PhD in
Cancer Research. Her interest in Nutrition lies particularly
in guiding the cancer patient to a healthier status
through dietary modification and supplementation.
Her work in the laboratory focussed on studying the
behaviour of cancer cells in an in-vitro tissue culture
system. This work enabled her to determine how cancer
cells are able to grow independently and differently
from normal cells.
While there are no guarantees to preventing cancer through
ones diet, it certainly is possible to maintain
optimal health and therefore to lessen ones chances
of developing the disease by dietary intervention. The
top ten power foods, which have been shown to contain
nutrients with cancer-fighting properties, are:
1)
red, yellow and orange fruits
2) red, yellow and orange vegetables
3) cruciferous and leafy green vegetables
4) certain mushrooms
5) sea vegetables
6) alliums i.e. garlic, leek, onion
7) legumes
8) soy products
9) nuts and seeds
10) whole grains
These foods act by keeping the liver detoxification
pathways working, by altering the properties of cell
membranes and by changing cell-signalling systems.
Soy,
cooked tomatoes, green tea, omega -3 fatty acids, garlic
and onions, pumpkin seeds, cruciferous vegetables, legumes
and whole grains offer the strongest protection against
prostate cancer. Both breast and prostate cancer are
associated with a high animal fat diet with not enough
fibre.
In the event that a person develops cancer, it is possible
to both improve the quality of the patients life
and to enhance the immune system so that the patient
is better able to fight the disease, by changing the
diet and adding supplements. Dr Patrick Quillin has
rated the following supplements, based upon available
scientific and clinical information as those most likely
to help all cancer patients: mushroom extract, digestive
enzymes, intestinal microflora, a broad spectrum vitamin
and mineral supplement, vitamin C, selenium and essential
fatty acids. These supplements together with an immune
boosting diet work synergistically to help the patient
fight the disease.
Certain nutrients help to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapeutic
agents i.e.;
1) vitamin C has been shown to reduce the toxicity but
not the antitumor activity of adriamycin.
2) cisplatin (for ovarian cancer) plus glutathione predicts
a better outcome with less toxicity than cisplatin alone.
3) melatonin can restore normal blood-cell production
after chemotherapy
4) vitamin E lessens the adverse effects of adriamycin
including heart damage and baldness
5) coenzyme Q10 also decreases cardiotoxicity
