ETERNAL
HEALTH RADIO SHOW: On 89.7 FM on Tuesday nights
7.30-9.00pm
The
Shows highlights:
Over
the past two weeks 4/4/01 and 11/4/01 we discussed osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis. Here are the major points:
Osteoarthritis is caused by:
1. Hereditary factors
2. Degenerative changes which worsen with aging
3. Wear and tear although athletes who wear well-cushioned
footwear are spared as a general rule
4. Obesity
5. Free-radical disease
Medical
management includes the following:
1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.
2. The new Cox 2 inhibitors including celebrex and vioxx,
which have a lower side-effect profile but cause gastrointestinal
problems nevertheless.
3. Conventional medication for pain relief.
4. Surgery.
Alternative
treatments include:
1. The nutrients glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate and
MSM which address the underlying process that is damaged
cartilage thereby reducing inflammation and relieving
pain.
2. Herbal treatments in the form of ginger, boswellia
and turmeric.
3. Dietary manipulation, which involves avoiding red
meat and dairy products as well as the nightshade group
of vegetables, comprised of tomatoes, capsicum and potatoes.
RHEUMATOID
ARTHRITIS
This is an autoimmune disease and the cause remains
obscure
Prominent theories are:
1. The presence of abnormal bugs, which inadvertently
trigger the immune system leading to joint disease.
These bacteria and parasites can be identified by means
of a comprehensive stool analysis and blood tests, which
target the organisms DNA PCR.
2. Food allergies/sensitivities where RAST testing is
appropriate. Unfortunately standard testing does not
always reveal food sensitivities. Elimination and challenge
then becomes the gold standard.
Alternative
treatment:
1. Eliminate certain foods including nuts, wheat, dairy,
eggs, oats, coffee, vegemite, apples, tomatoes and oranges.
2. Vegan/vegetarian diets are useful as they reduce
inflammation.
3. Include supplements of zinc, copper and selenium.
4. Add to this gammalinoleic acid in the form of borage
seed oil and omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish
oil.
5. Herbs such as turmeric, ginger and boswellia are
also helpful.
6. Special nutrients like cetyl myristoleate and phytosterols
have a modulating effect on the immune system thereby
down regulating those components that have become overactive.
Medical
treatments:
Antibiotics like metronidazole (flagyl) and the tetracycline
group (doxycycline) have been utilised to target the
bugs that are supposedly initiating the arthritis. These
have been found to yield some positive benefits.
Mark
Andrews who is a practitioner of Neural Organization
Technique was our interviewee of the week. This treatment
involves a subtle reorganisation of the survival reflex
by means of gentle massage and manipulation techniques,
which achieves major therapeutic results.
This
therapy can be used to treat any pain syndrome including
headaches, unresolving whiplash injuries, backaches
and even irritable bowel syndrome. ADD/ADHD can also
be managed with this therapy. Consultations can be arranged
at the following phone no. 02 - 9365 1333.
