Radio show 10/7/01
This week we interviewed
Paul Gassner about prostate health. These were the highlights:
The function of the prostate is to provide lubrication
and nutrition for sperm.
50% of men have evidence of prostatic enlargement by
the time they reach 60.
The following nutrients
may safeguard prostatic wellbeing;
Vitamin E
Vitamin D
Selenium
Lycopene
Omega-3 fatty acids
Zinc
Red clover
Soy
Diets high in saturated
fat and red meat are also considered to be harmful to
the prostate.
The PSA blood test plus a digital rectal exam is considered
to be the most useful screen for prostate cancer at
present.
Dr Gassner advised
that these tests should commence at age 40 for any man
who has a 1st degree relative who has developed prostate
cancer and should be done annually in all men from the
age of 50.
Treatment of prostatic
enlargement involves essentially three options. Either
doing nothing, opting for drug treatments such as the
new alpha blocking agent flomax or taking natural remedies
including the herbs saw palmetto, stinging nettle and
epilobium.
As far as prostate
cancer is concerned conventional medical treatments
include once again doing nothing if the cancer is low
grade in nature, surgical treatments or radiotherapy.
Alternative treatments such as PC-SPES were not discussed
on the programme.
